Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, with peak statistical activity from August through October. That doesn't mean Cancún is in constant danger through those months — direct hits are relatively infrequent — but it's worth planning around deliberately rather than ignoring.

Before you book

Look specifically for cancellation and rebooking policies tied to named storms, not just general flexible-date policies. Many hotels and airlines have specific hurricane/storm policies that only kick in once a storm is officially tracking toward the region — read the actual trigger condition, not just the marketing summary.

Travel insurance

A policy with "cancel for any reason" or specific storm coverage is worth pricing out for trips booked deep into peak season (August–October). Standard trip insurance often only pays out once a hurricane warning is actually issued for your specific destination, which can be too late to matter for a rebooking decision.

If a storm is approaching during your trip

Resorts in this region are experienced with storm protocols and will communicate evacuation or shelter-in-place plans directly — follow hotel and official guidance over general internet advice in the moment. Keep your passport, some cash, and essential medication together and easily grabbable, just in case.

The upside

Rates drop meaningfully in the wetter months, and plenty of summer and fall trips go by with nothing worse than an afternoon downpour. It's a real trade-off, not a reason to avoid the season outright.
