Holbox (pronounced hol-BOSH) is a car-free island a few hours from Cancún — sand streets, low-rise guesthouses, and a noticeably slower pace than the Hotel Zone.

Getting there

It's a drive of roughly 2–2.5 hours from Cancún to the ferry port at Chiquilá, followed by a short ferry crossing to the island. Most visitors go by rental car, colectivo, or an organized transfer that bundles both legs.

Whale shark season

Holbox is one of the main jumping-off points for whale shark snorkeling tours, typically running from around June through September, when the sharks feed in the nutrient-rich waters offshore. Tours are heavily regulated (for the animals' protection), so book with an operator that follows official guidelines rather than the cheapest option you find.

Is it worth an overnight?

Given the travel time, most people find an overnight (or two) makes more sense than a rushed day trip — enough time to actually slow down, which is the whole point of going.
