About 30–35 minutes south of the airport, Puerto Morelos is what a lot of the coast looked like before large-scale resort development — a real town square, a fishing pier, and low-rise buildings rather than towers.
The reef
Part of the Mesoamerican Reef system sits just a few hundred meters offshore and is protected as a national park, making it one of the more convenient snorkeling spots on this stretch of coast — short boat rides instead of long tour-bus days.
What else to do
The town center has a good, low-key restaurant scene, a Sunday market, and easy access to nearby cenotes inland — a solid base if you want beach and jungle without staying in Tulum or Playa del Carmen.
