Downtown Cancún gets overlooked by visitors who never leave the Hotel Zone, which is a real shame — it's a functioning Mexican city with a distinct character, good food, and a much more honest sense of place than the resort strip.
Mercado 28
The main market for crafts, textiles, hammocks, and souvenirs — prices are negotiable, quality varies enormously, and the food section at the back serves genuinely good regional food at local prices. It's the best single stop for anyone who wants to take something home that isn't from a resort gift shop.
Parque de las Palapas
The social heart of downtown — a large open plaza surrounded by food stalls, with live music most evenings and a relaxed local crowd. Come in the evening for the full effect: it's the kind of place that's hard to describe well but immediately makes sense when you're in it.
Avenida Tulum and surroundings
The main commercial spine of the center, with banks, pharmacies, affordable restaurants, and the everyday infrastructure of a Mexican city. Not a tourist attraction in itself, but navigating it confidently is what unlocks the rest of downtown.
Getting there from the Hotel Zone
R-1 bus or a short taxi. The ride takes 15–25 minutes depending on traffic. The area around Mercado 23 (smaller, more local than Mercado 28) is worth a separate visit if you have a second downtown day.
